270 containers overboard near Dutch Islands

Here’s a timely reminder for the new year of the realities of shipping goods, and precisely why cargo insurance is so important!

MSC Zoe was on a rotational voyage from Asia to Portugal and Germany, when things didn’t quite go as planned, reports Insurance Marine News:

Containership MSC Zoe (IMO 9703318) lost some 270 containers overboard earlier this week near the Dutch Wadden islands of Terschelling and Vlieland. Containers from the 19,224 teu vessel, which was on a voyage to Bremerhaven, were reported to have washed up on the islands.

Residents of the islands were warned that three of the boxes, which have yet to have been retrieved, contained the toxic organic peroxide in powder form.  So far 21 containers had been found on Vlieland, Terschelling and Ameland. Nothing has washed ashore on Texel.

The peroxide was in a yellow container (number MSCU3713629), a blue container (number: CXDU2077321) and a rust-brown container (number: TCLU41747408).

The Coast Guard called on people on Vlieland, Terschelling and Ameland to stop helping to clean up the beaches because of the three not-yet-located dangerous containers.

Other containers included car parts, toys, televisions and home goods. The containers broke up in the surf, spilling contents onto the beaches. The Dutch Coastguard issued a navigational warning.

Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has appointed a salvage company to coordinate the retrieval of cargo and to clean up beaches. Specialised ships equipped with sonar have been deployed to search for missing cargo at sea.

Meanwhile, MSC Zoe continued her route to Bremerhaven for cargo discharge. MSC said that it was analysing the causes of the incident.
