Charting a Simpler Course for Commercial Boats

NTI launches Commercial Boat cover, a simpler, plain language policy that expands its Marine offering to provide a more practical way to insure smaller commercial vessels.

For years, NTI has supported Australia’s marine industry with specialist insurance across vessels and maritime operations. From small operators through to complex commercial risks, the team has a deep understanding of how businesses operate on and around the water.

At the centre of this is NTI’s Commercial Hull offering, designed to protect vessels against physical loss and damage across a broad range of environments. The Commercial Hull policy is built around “Institute Clauses” - a standardised set of clauses developed for a range of vessel types and sizes, that structure cover around specific listed events.

Institute clauses remain an important part of the Hull insurance landscape, particularly for larger or more complex risks. But as NTI National Hull Product Manager John James explains, this structure may not always be the most practical fit for every customer.

“To understand what’s covered under an Institute Clause policy, you need to have a reasonable knowledge of the clauses, what they mean and which ones are listed in the policy”.

For smaller, locally operated vessels, and for brokers who may only handle marine insurance occasionally, that level of detail can create unnecessary complexity.

That insight, and a response to the needs of the market, led to the development of NTI’s latest Marine product, Commercial Boat cover.

As NTI’s Head of Marine Portfolio Daniel Morrison explains:

This is a product we’ve spent a lot of time thinking through. Our team recognised the need for something simpler, and Commercial Boat is the result of that work. It’s been deliberately designed to be easier to understand without losing the strength of cover NTI is known for.

Plain Wording, Plain Sailing

Commercial Boat complements NTI’s existing offering for vessels, providing a more accessible option for smaller, less complex risks.

It introduces a plain-language policy with a simplified structure, designed to make it easier for brokers and customers to understand how the cover works in practice.

As James puts it:

“Simple risks can usually use a simple solution to give them the cover they need. Our intention is to provide a more practical alternative to traditional hull wordings, for when complexity may not be required.

The policy has been designed to align with how these vessels are used day to day.

Rather than requiring brokers and customers to read through a number of Institute Clauses to understand their cover, Commercial Boat cover is a plain language wording based around accidental damage to respond to a wide range of common incidents that can occur.

“Whether you have an accidental collision, grounding, fire or your boat becomes submerged, or is stolen - the policy covers you for a wide range of things that can go wrong,” James explains.

From this base, the policy can be tailored through optional extensions.

These include Loss of Earnings, which can help protect income if a vessel is out of action, and Third Party Liability for injury or damage to others. Liability cover can also be extended to include passengers and pollution risks where required.

This approach keeps the core cover simple, while still allowing flexibility for different operating needs.

So Who's It Made For?

Commercial Boat is designed for a significant portion of Australian operators across a broad cross-section of the maritime industry. It can apply to a variety of vessels from the likes of tourism boats used for charter fishing, whale watching and sightseeing, to working boats used for inspections, maintenance and community services, through to commercially owned small craft such as rowing sculls, kayaks and canoes operated by schools, clubs and community organisations.

As James explains:

There are over 30,000 commercial vessels operating across Australia, supporting a wide range of industries and activities. While NTI provides insurance solutions across most of that market, Commercial Boat has been specifically designed for the many smaller vessels that don’t require a tailored solution for their day-to-day operations.

It’s important to note that Commercial Boat cover, as the name suggests, is designed specifically for commercial use. It is not intended for private pleasure boating or luxury craft but for vessels that are part of a business, organisation or structured activity.

Expanding the Fleet

Commercial Boat cover marks an important step forward in NTI’s Marine offering, expanding our products to make our trusted cover more accessible and better suited to even more operators around the country.

As Daniel Morrison puts it:

“This is something we’re genuinely proud to bring to market. It builds on the strength of our Marine offering in a really practical way and reflects the confidence we have in our team to deliver consistently for brokers and customers when it counts.”
