Glossary (Trucking Terms)

  • Agitator

    Definition:

    A bowl fitted to the rear of a standard rigid truck, used to transport and mix concrete form a batching plant to a construction site.

  • B-Double

    Definition:

    An articulated vehicle with a second Semi-Trailer attached to the rear of the first Semi-Trailer by means of a turntable.

  • Bogie Driver

    Definition:

    A Prime Mover or truck with two drive axles at the back. A 6x4 or, if twin steer, 8x4 vehicle.

  • Cab-over or Cab Over Engine (COE)

    Definition:

    A truck with the cab mounted directly above the engine and front axle.

  • Combination Vehicle

    Definition:

    A truck towing one or more trailers.

  • Converter Dolly or Dolly

    Definition:

    A unit designed to convert a Semi-Trailer to a Dog Trailer.

  • Curtainsider or Tautliner

    Definition:

    A van-type body with curtain sides that are held down by straps attached to the tie-rail and pulled tight lengthwise by a ratchet.

  • Dog

    Definition:

    A device used to tension chains when securing loads.  Can also be referred to as a load binder.

  • Dog Trailer

    Definition:

    A dog trailer is towed behind the lead trailer of a road train combination, or a rigid truck, and comes in a variety of axle configurations.

  • Excavator

    Definition:

     A vehicle consisting of an articulated arm, bucket and cab mounted on a pivot.

  • Flat Top

    Definition:

     A truck, trailer, or Semi-Trailer that has a flat goods-carrying area without sides.

  • Frig (Fridge) Pan

    Definition:

    A refrigerated pantechnicon or van, with the body often now made of fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) and usually having a diesel-powered refrigeration unit at the front.

  • Gates

    Definition:

     Frames used at the front, sides and rear of the load-carrying platform to contain the load.

  • Jinker

    Definition:

    A jinker is a trailer historically used to haul logs or timber.  These days, Jinkers do a whole range of tasks mainly relating to over-dimensional loads such as houses and large trusses.

    Some large Jinkers have steerable axles.

  • Pantechnicon, Pantech or Pan

    Definition:

    A completely enclosed van body on a rigid vehicle or Semi-Trailer (eg. furniture van).

  • Pig trailer

    Definition:

    A load carrying trailer that has an axle group near its centre and is connected by a drawer bar, which is normally rigid.

    A pig trailer can have one, two or three axles.

  • Prime Mover

    Definition:

    A short wheel, or long wheel, based truck used to tow a Semi-Trailer.

  • Rigid Motor Vehicle

    Definition:

    A vehicle without a trailer.

  • Road Train

    Definition:

    A multi-combination vehicle hauling up to four trailers.

    This can be a prime mover hauling more than one trailer or a rigid (body truck) hauling two trailers.

  • Semi or Semi-Trailer

    Definition:

    An articulated unit made up of a prime mover with a trailer connected by a turntable.

  • Skeletal or Skel Trailer

    Definition:

    A trailer or Semi-Trailer that has no tray but has attachments fitted to the frame for the carrying of goods (eg. Twist locks for containers, or bolsters for logs or timber).

  • Stock Crate

    Definition:

    A truck or trailer body built for carrying livestock.

  • Table Top

    Definition:

    Truck with a flat bed or tray body.

  • Tipper, Tip-Truck or Tip-Trailer

    Definition:

    A truck or trailer which can discharge its load by tilting the cargo body.

  • Triple

    Definition:

    A multi-combination unit with tree trailers, usually of the same size.

  • TurnTable

    Definition:

    A device for coupling a Prime Mover to a Semi-Trailer. The three basic types are greasy plate, ball race and fixed.
