Accident Research

It is NTI's belief that effective research focusing on current information is a crucial qualification to a greater insight into serious heavy vehicle crashes.  Fundamentally, truck crash research is a prerequisite for achieving sustainable improvements in road safety - not only for our customers but for all road users.

Since 1998, NTI has conducted a series of longitudinal studies tracking a workforce of Australian heavy vehicle drivers involved in accidents.  These quantitative studies are undertaken biannually by NTI's National Truck Accident Research Centre based on primary data of major heavy truck crashes managed by NTI.  The studies only include incidents with an aggregate cost greater than (>) $50,000.

For the puposes of NTI's academic research, investigators group and assess a wide variety of evidence.  Such information is extracted by the following means:

  • NTI Claims Database;
  • NTI Accident Assist 24 hour national support centre;
  • Claims forms and accident reports;
  • Police reports;
  • Independent investigators;
  • Interviews with repair managers, drivers, owners, risksurveyors and witnesses; and
  • On-scene crash recovery operators.
