Fire on Maersk Line container vessel

On Tuesday 6 March, Maersk Line container vessel Maersk Honam reported an explosion and subsequent fire in one of its cargo holds. The onboard fire continues and the current situation is described as “very critical”.

The vessel, carrying 7,860 containers, was heading from Singapore towards Suez, on a rotational voyage calling at ports in Malta, Spain, Italy, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and UAE. It is currently estimated to be 900 nautical miles from land, southeast of Oman.

Given the practice of transhipping freight from Australia via Singapore, it is possible nti customers have cargo on board.

All impacted parties will be contacted by Maersk directly. Should your clients be impacted by this event, nti’s specialist marine claims team is here to help, 24/7. Customers or intermediaries needing to make a claim should call NTI Accident Assist (1800 NTI NOW or 1800 684 669).

It is currently unknown what ignited the fire upon the vessel. Maersk will investigate the situation with authorities.

Maersk have reported 23 crew were safely evacuated to a nearby vessel, while four remaining crew members are still unaccounted for. The search and rescue mission is ongoing.
